case of hidden memory in 5.3

[Database Administrator]

Hello
We have a p550 with 16gb It looks loke physical memory allocation is
almost exhausted when it should not be
Here is what I'm seeing. this is the memory utilisation when I shutdown
and startup say, oracle. The sga is just over a gig so you see some
memory get deallocated and then it allocates it again.. There was
literally nothing else that I could see running on the box so I would
expect to see the free value at 1500000.

enterpise manager is still reporting memory to be 88% utilised. I don't
know where the other memory has 'gone'?

If I start up 2databases with only 1 GB sga the the server starts
swapping alot any Ideas?
Kernal setting or a chuser setting?

Any help or hints apprcated!!

Is that "enterprise manager" as in Oracles fancy management GUI?
If so, please don't use an non-AIX and application specific tool
to monitor AIX-specifica. Get 'nmon' from the IBM site:
http://www-941.ibm.com/collaboration...WikiPtype/nmon

Check how much memory is used for filesystem caching. If your
memory is heavily used by the FS-cache (and you don't need it),
you can play with the minperm & maxperm parameters. See here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...perm_param.htm

But you should really ask yourself, if you'd rather have your
memory used (since you already payed for it) or if you'd prefer
it to sit around being idle ...
