| I'm trying to find a good platform for FreeBSD 7.0 based web and database servers. FreeBSD certified hardware listed at http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/hardware.html are not available in my area, so I obliged to choose the mid-level solutions from Dell, HP and IBM. I would be happy if someone will give me some feedback about his experience installing FreeBSD on any of Dell, HP or IBM servers. I know that my question is quite broad: my aim is to investigate the level of FreeBSD compatibility with each of three major brands available in my region. Thanks, Eugen |

I'm running 6.2 on an IBM Server 206m. It works fine - as long as you don't try to use the Adaptec 9405 SAS controller on the more upmarket models (I just removed the daughterboard and dropped back to the onboard Intel controller). xorg supports the onboard graphics, and the Broadcom gigabit is supported by the bge driver. -- Bob Eager UNIX since v6.. http://tinyurl.com/2xqr6h |

Adaptec 9405 SAS is not supported? -Eugen |

All worked well. I can't tell you that I built servers with high loads but everything I did build worked well with what we did with them. |

What requirements do you have? Rainer |

I've been running production systems with FreeBSD on a range of Proliant hardware for some years now. FreeBSD on Dell's intel processor machines is great with one exception. Don't use anything RAID related from Dell. Their controllers are all bogus, not to mention really expensive for what you get. |

Hi Folks, For any database application, the Servers at Freedom Technologies are guaranteed to run FreeBSD (i386 and amd64). You won't go wrong with their Servers. If you have really high performance server needs you might want to check out the quad six-core rack server. Then again, the new Intel Quad-Core 5500 Xeon Processors are available in the new Servers which are really great for database servers. The big thing with their servers is the reliability and performance. The Servers are not just thrown together in a hurry or production line, they are built by hand and well tested before shipping. They also make a really cool (and quiet) desktop which runs FreeBSD |
