ports makefiles

Hi,

I have had to tweak a ports makefile to change configure options to
reflect a non-standard directory layout. I know this is a bad idea but
I cannot find where the over-riding makefile for this lives though I'm
pretty certain it exists.

Can someone point me in the right direction, I've read the ports
chapter in the Handbook and I've Googled 'til I'm blue in the face but
to no avail. Perhaps if I knew what the thing was called....
