| On a PC I have an FM9 DB, with a table having a container field in which I want to have a spoken sentence. When clicking twice on it, I get a recorder windows appearing which permits me with a microphone to register my sentence. I have Quicktime intalled. But when I call for it I get a terrible roaring in the background while my sentence is spoken out. While doing the same with the pure Windows sound recorder, the sound is correct. I figure there should be some tunings to make but which ones ? All trials I made were unsuccessful. Could you help me ? Many thanks. Remi-Noel |

Maybe the Windows Sound Recorder is removing / dampening that noise while QuickTime is simply recording everything. I'm not sure how you could get around it, other than recording in Windows Sound Recorder, saving the file and then Importing that into the Container Field. Remi-Noel I can't offer a solution, but it looks like FMP has some influence on the recording. Although how I don't know. But here is what I thought. When recording through an embedded container, the file is inside your solution. I think it would be better the store them outside FMP and use a referenced calculation. keep well Ursus "Your Name" news:genlv8$gvs$1@lust.ihug.co.nz... > > "Remi-Noel Menegaux" > news:490ef781$0$29405$426a74cc@news.free.fr... >> Hi, >> On a PC I have an FM9 DB, with a table having a container field in which >> I >> want to have a spoken sentence. Thanks, Harry and Ursus for your suggestions. Harry, Before I posted, I tried on many computers and systems and by others persons too. So I don't think it is the proximity of the computer fan that causes that. Importing from a file maybe a good idea worth trying but I'll have to script and maybe use a plugin to do that as it has to be used by average persons. For both, In fact my application (developed by a terrifically skilled friend in FM7-9 in England) is a 'free' one we give to handicapped persons who cannot speak out themselves. They pickup and choose a prepared written sentence (or a 'pictogram') which action thus makes the spoken phrase (prepared by an assistant) out loudly. Ursus, Yes your suggestion of having an extra folder of prerecorded sound files could be the answer, but here again we'll have to make it handy to adapt to any situation. Thanks again to both of you. Any other suggestions or practical work around are welcome. Remi-Noel In addition, As I was pretty desperate (and in a hurry) I cross-posted my question to the FM Expert list and funny enough (if I may say so...) is that other participants put messages as making run a FM recorded sound made the FM to crash ! One answerer said the following : Quote I found a similar problem documented elsewhere after a Google search. Basically the workaround is to add at least 1 frame of video to the QT (QuickTime) file and it works. If your file is strictly and audio file ->CRASH, but the moment you add at least a 1 frame of video, the problem is resolved. I will email FM Inc., even though the poster of the blog I came across already did so when he encountered this problem in version 7. Another one could simply be the air moving past the microphone itself (even when you can't feel anything), or electrical interference from the computer / monitor or something else nearby. If it's not always there, it could be someone using power tools or radio controlled toys in a nearby area, etc. Helpful Harry Now told it will take 4 to 8 days for the Internet provider to fix my Mac's connection problem ... assuming they are even looking in the correct place. xo( |

Thanks, Harry, for your answer. In my particular case I am a very quiet environment. Anyway as that DB will be largely diffused to many unknown average users, the 'Phrases' have to be set locally, in a way I can't manage, except issuing recommandations. The best (but still unsufficient) I found for the moment are : - use an external microphone (imbeded ones were desatrous as the microphone seems on portable PCs to be placed very close to the hard disk, thus ... it gets all its spinning noise). - adjust the sound parameters : go to Control Panel / sound / Microphone / levels / 'Microphone' put to 50% and the 'amplification microphone' to 10 dB. If ever, one has other ideas... Thank for the attention. I have found something that works on windows. On a proper recording device record whatever you need. Save it as wav on your hard disk Open your fmp solution. Create a container field on a layout. Rightclick inside the field and select insert object A new window appears with a list of registered objects. Scroll down and select wave-sound Click ok. The sound-object window appears. Select edit (the second menu-item) and below that select: insert file (fourth item) A new window opens, find and select the wav file and click open. The wav file gets imported in the filemaker container. It takes a little with a small file, somewhat longer with a large file Close the sound-object window. You will now see a loadspeaker icon in the container field. To activate the sound file you can create a simple script. goto field < select/perform ; MyContainer > The field has to be on every layout where you need the sound file. So you have to lock it, otherwise the user canb delete its contents. Ursus, I DO thank you for that suggestion that certainly make it worth being tried extensively. I'll do it. I think I also have to pursue a trial with the Troi File plugin, as I am a bit concerned with the actual practicality for an 'Admin' person - a hospital nurse or a benevolent person who is close to the handicapped person, but most probably not especially skilled in complex (for him/her) manipulations -. But maybe I could simply use a bunch of prerecorded 'pictograms' and pour it the way you described into the proper container field of the proper record (ie a sentence to be pronounced loudly). That' certainly is worth exploring seriously. Thanks again for your most valuable input.
