The info is based on several articles published on the internet. My thanks to previous writers too many to acknowledge here. Acknowledgements also to Wikipedia org Why Peercore prefers Ingres By Paul White - Senior something or other Introduction This is not going to be a Ingres vs OtherDB discussion. For me it is an easy choice. I currently maintain 5 different types of database systems and I have lost count of how many types I've been involved with over the last 25 years. Ingres is by far the best DBMS I have worked with. Advantages Here is what I perceive as Ingres advantages. Ingres has been around since the 70s. Ingres is the father of databases such as Sybase Server others. Incidentally, Sybase was rebranded in the 90s as "Microsoft SQL Server". It is OpenSource. Full source for the enterprise functionality is available for download. The code includes the DBMS server, utilities and the character based front-end and application development tools. OpenROAD has also been released OpenSource "empire project" We have one ingres DBA maintaining over 100 databases across around 10 sites and providing 2nd level support for another 50 sites. Ingres databases just keep going and going. Longest uptime I recorded was on Solaris 2.6 with 80+ users 24x7 manufacturing operation was over 400 days. Flexible cheap licensing - real per machine license. No extra costs for vmware installations, Or you can license per user or for a site. No CALs required. Ingres / OpenROAD have never been infected by a virus. We do see regular security alerts / patches being issued which discuss potential flaws or buffer overflow issues. Easy to install and configure. You can be up and running in less than 5 min. Multi platform Ingres runs on most types of Linux, Unix, VMS and Windows. The full Enterprise functionality is available on all platforms. Also take note that OpenROAD applications can run on Microsoft and Unix/Linux platforms and, using Ingres technology, can run over Ingres, Oracle, SQL Server or DB2 without changing code or recompiling. Ingres Support is world class. They use 24x7 follow the sun. It is all packaged as part of the licence/ maintenance fee. They have experts in Australia who speak English. The off shore support is not bad. Ingres functionality is enterprise class, very mature and robust. You get access to all the functions straight out of the box. You are not limited to by number of connections, number of CPUs or database size. There are no Developer or Demo versions. For an opensource product I think that is pretty impressive. The feature list is huge. I'm not going to cut/paste it here. Please go check out ingres.com for the marketing blurb and feature comparisons. >From my experience the most useful features are: * Ability to rollback a database to a particular point in time. This can be for the whole database, a table, or just an individual transaction. The backup options are fully customiseable. * Performance is superior. Ingres tables and indexes can be stored as HEAP, BTREE, ISAM and HASH giving you detailed control over storage parameters. This allows you to optimise DB operations. * Low memory requirements. In my experience, Ingres uses a small fraction compared to other DBMSs. You can control how much memory to throw at each of the components such as DB Cache, Query storeage facility, Relation Definition cache etc. At one site, an Ingres server supporting Peercore Financials required less than 100Mb RAM was converted to MSSQL where the memory requirements were nearly 1GB for similar performance. Currently, Ingres has more than 10,000 customers including 136 of the Fortune 500 companies, 375 of the Global 2000 companies and a number of public sector entities worldwide, including 3M, BAE Systems, Cypress Semi-Conductor, Fujitsu, Lufthansa, and National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Large and active user community around the world. Ingres Corp actively encourages input and participation by its users. At the user forums, there are often postings by the original architects of Ingres.
