This article, part 2 of a four-part series, shows how to develop the BuddyNote plug-in from scratch. This article is part 2 of a four-part series on working with plug-ins in IBM Lotus Sametime V7.5.1. In Part 1, "Working with plug-ins in IBM Lotus Sametime V7.5.1: Configuring the Eclipse environment," you learned that Lotus Sametime V7.5.1 is based on the rich client platform, IBM Lotus Expeditor, which in turn is based on the open source, plug-in model of Eclipse, which can be configured as a Plug-in Development Environment (PDE) for Lotus Sametime. Part 1 walked you through the configuration steps. In this, the second installment of the series, you use the Eclipse workspace you configured in part 1 to develop the custom plug- in, BuddyNote, from scratch. This clears the way for HP, Gateway, LaCie, Medion, and now Iomega and Fujitsu Siemens, (both also announced today, the latter in Europe only) to begin selling their Home Server-powered hardware later this quarter. If you're unfamiliar, Windows Home Server is Microsoft's attempt to solve the growing problem of fragmented media collections. http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9744971-7.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Vista plodding along six months after release | CNN Tech Nearly six months after it launched, gripes over what doesn't work with Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system continue, eclipsing positive buzz over the program's improved desktop search, graphics and security. http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/ptech/0....ap/index.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM buys DataMirror for data integration server | CNET IBM on Monday announced it intends to acquire DataMirror, a maker of real-time data integration software, for about $161 million in cash. Markham, Ontario- based DataMirror's tools are designed to trigger actions from information stored in a data warehouse. For example, a retailer could automatically replenish inventory based on sales data stored in a data warehouse. IBM said that the software will be incorporated into its data integration server. It is the 21st acquisition in IBM's information-on-demand strategy of making corporate information more easily accessed and shared. http://news.com.com/IBM+buys+DataMir...l?tag=nefd.hed ------------------------------------------------------------------- Beware Fake Domain Renewal Notices Sometimes the goal is to steal your domain, sometimes just to steal money from you. But be very careful when you get a domain renewal notice; if it's not from your registrar, it's not to be trusted. Thanks to the folks at Domain Name Wire for blogging about a serious scam designed to steal money from domain name owners. You could say it's a new sort of phish. Domain renewal scams are not a new thing. Because whois information is public, unscrupulous registrars have, for years, harvested the information in it and sent renewal notices to unwitting customers of other domains. If you "renew" you actually end up transferring the domain name and perhaps incurring additional charges. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2159134,00.asp ------------------------------------------------------------------- Could YouTube drag Apple into copyright fight? Here's something that shouldn't surprise many people: The video journalist who has been in a closely watched legal tussle with YouTube is also peeved at Apple. Bob Tur is famous in Los Angeles for buzzing around the city in his helicopter and filming historical (and often bizarre) moments, such as O.J. Simpson's slow-speed Bronco chase, oodles of high-speed police pursuits and the beating of a trucker at the beginning of the Los Angeles riots. A year ago this month, he filed a suit against YouTube, claiming the company encouraged copyright violations on its site. He's irked at Apple now because the new iPhone has a feature that allows users to view YouTube videos. http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9745198-7.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Intel to join '$100 laptop' project | CNN Tech The nonprofit that aims to seed the developing world with inexpensive laptop computers for schoolchildren has made peace with Intel Corp., the project's most powerful rival. The XO laptop uses very little power and can be mechanically recharged by hand. The One Laptop Per Child program and Intel said Friday that the chip maker would join the board of the nonprofit and contribute funding. The nonprofit effort -- known as the "$100 laptop" because of the low price it hopes to reach with mass production -- has been trying to line up governments in several countries to buy the machines, which for now cost $175. http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/ptech/0....ap/index.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM Visionary Wladawsky-Berger Steps Down | eWeek Irving Wladawsky-Berger, IBM's vice president of technical strategy and innovation, who led most of the company's big-bet moves into new technology arenas, has retired. How do you say goodbye to a legend? Well, if you're IBM, you don't. You just let them "retire" and you continue to tap their expertise on a part-time basis. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2159087,00.asp ------------------------------------------------------------------- 25th anniversary of the computer virus? Not so fast | CNET The Internet has been abuzz lately claiming we are in the 25th year of the computer virus. And while many people believe a 15-year-old created the first virus in 1982, I'm not so quick to agree. After digging through some Web sites offering insight into the history of the computer virus, only one thing is constant: Elk Cloner was not the first. Although some publications are claiming the poetic Elk Cloner virus was first, a host of viruses were ravaging computers in the 1970s. The world's first generally accepted computer was created by Charles Babbage and while many things are uncertain about its design, one thing is not: no viruses infected it. http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9745010-7.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Report sees tough road for Indian auto industry | IBM India is expected to be one of the top 10 countries in terms of vehicle sales by 2015. But a study by IBM and the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute finds the country faces significant challenges to continued rapid growth in its automotive industry. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_16.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM opens software patents to ease compatibility | IBM IBM says it’s granting universal and perpetual access to patents that will help disparate software share information, a process known as interoperability. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_11.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Comic site built by IBM no laughing matter | IBM This fall, DC Comics (home to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) will launch Zudacomics.com, a web comics imprint where comic creators can showcase their work and fans can vote on their favorite comics. IBM Global Business Services will design and build it. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_10.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Financial firms unready for global investment growth | IBM Worldwide investments are expected to quintuple to nearly $700 trillion by 2025, with 60 percent of the growth is coming from emerging markets. An IBM research report suggests that financial firms are not prepared to seize this opportunity. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_09.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- R&D journal focuses on business analytics | IBM Many businesses face a wealth of information, but struggle to extract value from it. The latest edition of the IBM Journal of Research and Development examines how advanced analytics can be used to solve a range of business problems. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_05.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM nuclear power center opens in France | IBM IBM is opening a center in France for improved design, construction, safety and operation of nuclear power plants. The Global Center of Excellence for Nuclear Power in La Gaude focuses on IBM software, hardware, consulting, and services industry offerings. Eighty percent of France’s power comes from nuclear plants. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/07/2007_07_02.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Consumers skeptical of product claims says IBM survey | IBM Recent product contaminations and recalls, along with confusion over marketing claims, have eroded shoppers’ trust in consumer product manufacturers, says an IBM survey. http://www.ibm.com/news/us/en/2007/06/2007_06_29.html __________________________________________________ _________________ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ DOMINONEWS.COM CONTACTS ///////////////////// Heather Schein, Site Editor (mailto:hschein@DominoNews.com) >> Send your comments, opinions, best practices and ideas. __________________________________________________ __________________ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER ////////////////////// Our DominoNews.com Newsletter can help you directly impact 125 million Lotus Notes Domino users as reported by IBM in Q2 2006.
