Is the Solaris 10 update 6 SPARC DVD any good? - solaris
This is a discussion on Is the Solaris 10 update 6 SPARC DVD any good? - solaris ; I've burned both the SPARC and x86 DVD for Solaris 10 10/08. The x86 DVD works fine, but I've had nothing but trouble with the SPARC DVD. It won't mount on either Solaris 10 SPARC or Solaris 9 SPARC. `vold' ...

| DVD works fine, but I've had nothing but trouble with the SPARC DVD. It won't mount on either Solaris 10 SPARC or Solaris 9 SPARC. `vold' dumps core on Solaris 10. I burned on a burner that I trust and that I've used for other Solaris 10 SPARC releases. The SPARC ISO file works fine for Live Upgrade. Has anyone else found a way to make the DVD work? -- -Gary Mills- -Unix Support- -U of M Academic Computing and Networking- |

What boxes you trying this on? |

I can read the DVD on my Windows Notebook but not with my Sun. Vold dumps a core and restarts immediately after that again and again. |

I downloaded the sparc DVD and the checksum is OK; then burned multiple copies on a good burner, but no sparc can mount it. I was able to mount it on an x86 system, spool up a Jumpstart server, and install sparc systems that way. Sparc systems that couldn't mount the DVD included Ultra25/Ultra45/T5220/Blade1500/ Blade2500/V490/V240/Blade2000. There's clearly an issue with the DVD. |

Since you were able to mount and read the DVD on an X86 system, it seems very clear that your issue is with the DVD drives on the SPARC boxes. |

I have tested the Sol. 10 10/08 DVD on different SAPRC systems. This DVD is definitly not mountable via vold but manual mounting works. I found also out that the structure (VTOC) of this DVD has changed. It seems that this DVD has only one "slice" on it. The previous versions had 7 slices which were separately readable via dd. -- BR Roland |

I can manually mount the DVD or use lofiadm to mount the ISO image. I find 2 things very interesting about SUN providing an ISO image that when burned to a DVD: 1) the DVD can't be auto mounted. 2) the DVD is supposed to be an OS install image, but I can't do a 'boot cdrom' to install the new OS. Makes you wonder what is going on at SUN. |
