| I'm new to this and I posted my question in the wrong place... so I am reposting it here. Does anyone know if it is possible to install SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 on the same development machine or the same Web Server machine? I am developing a GIS-based web application (ESRI's ArcGIS) that uses SQL Server 2005 as the backend database with a single-server architecture. But I also have mobile devices (running on Windows Mobile 5 and 6) that synchronizes with it. Now I need to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 (I'd like to try its spatial capability). I'm wondering if there would be "fatal" issues between the two (e.g., will my mobile apps still synchronize with the database, will SQL Server 2005 conflict with 2008 in the dev machine, etc.) Also, do I install the full version SQL Server on the Web Server or do I use the client license on it? Thought I read somewhere this is the way to go with web apps. Appreciate any help. |

There is no problem installing SQL-Server 2005 and 2008 on the same box. However, one of these must be at last a named instance because you cannot have to unnamed (or default) instances of SQL-Server on the same box. -- Sylvain Lafontaine, ing.
