Default SQL Server 2000 Cluster Installation Failed on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server

Hi everyone. It's 0:43 in the morning and I am driven crazy by this
installation failure.

the last part of the sqlstp.log file has been posted below. Anyone has
any idea what should I post next in order to find a cure? Thanks very
much!

00:18:27 Setup is performing required operations on cluster nodes.
This may take a few minutes...
00:18:27 C:\DOCUME~1\cnmaoj\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\SqlSetup\Bin\re msetup.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\cnmaoj\WINDOWS\remsetup.ini
00:18:27 Process Exit Code: (-1)
00:18:27 Begin Action : GetRemsetupRetCode
00:18:27 Installation return status on CNSN26 : -1
00:18:27 Installation return status on CNSN25 : -1
00:18:27 End Action : GetRemsetupRetCode
00:18:27 End Action : Run setup on cluster nodes
00:18:27 One or more errors occurred while running remote setup on the
clustered machines.
00:18:31 Setup failed to perform required operations on the cluster
nodes.
00:18:31 Begin Action : ClusterErrorCleanup
00:18:31 End Action : ClusterErrorCleanup
00:18:31 End Action : ClusterSetupHelper

You are going to need to post the sql setup log from the remote node in
order for someone here to troubleshoot this problem. It looks like things
went OK on the local node but failed on the remote one.

And there is no SqlstpN.log on both of the nodes. I doubt the cause of
the failure is very basic and stupid... Anyone can help?

Default Re: SQL Server 2000 Cluster Installation Failed on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server

Thank you Geoff. but the problem is i can't find any sql*.log on the
other node.

one the local node i found one "C:\Documents.log" which was created at
the same minute the local Sqlstp.log created. It reads as below,

"#### SQL Server Remote Setup - Start Time 12/10/05 00:18:27 ####

An invalid input value was supplied!

The required parameter, NumRemoteServers, was not found in section
[args]!"

Any idea what it is? Thanks!

Probably a permissions issue. Here are a few basic things to check.

Make sure you don't have administrative shares turned off. SQL uses them
during the install.

Install from a domain account that is a local administrator on both nodes.
Log in to the console of each node with the install and service accounts
before installing SQL. Make sure your tmp and temp folders are valid and
matching on all nodes for both logins.

Try copying the source CD into a local directory on one server.

SQL won't install on a Terminal Server system.

If you are installing a Named Instance, you will need to follow this KB
article:

Finally, here is an excellent webcast on installing SQL 2000 on a Windows
2003 cluster.

Thanks Geoff.

The weird thing is all things you mentioned are ok on the nodes. I
pinged each other and visited \\[node_name]\admin$ and i have all the
accounts domain admin prilivege as well as established account profiles
on the node server. I even tried single node cluster install and the
same failure takes place as well.

but there is still something interesting when i am googling in deep
depression. it seems most of the answers provided to people like me
were written by you, Geoff.

Good news! The problem has been identified to be caused by Terminal
Service!

Remove the Terminal Service component and the problem has been gone.
Wow, this hurts. It's 2:15 in the morning and I am going to sleep.
Tomorrow I might be here to pose questions about SQL Server SP4. God
bless me!

I do spend a lot of time on the newsgroups, probably more than I should. At
least it keeps me out of trouble.
