SQL 2005 Cluster install Error

I am attempting to install SQL 2005 as a clustered install on a single
machine (we are currently testing and have no need for the true redunancy).

One of the nodes in the cluster is currently running 2000 and the other is
the one I'm trying to install 2005 on. Both have access to the quorum. I
have changed from both having access to both data volumes and I have tried
each having access to only their own data volume.

At this point both machine seem to act appropriately on the cluster. I can
work with groups and resources and move between machines and still access the
resources.

When I try to install SQL 2005 I get some strange errors. The first error
is "Error 1324 The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid
character." At this point the install fails and just cleans up.

In addition to the above error, I have seen "Error 29528 The setup has
encountered an unexpected error while Setting Internal Properties. The error
is: 183" which seems to be related to the above message.

I have tried to be thorough with troubleshooting. I have tried rebuilding
the machines and such. I have tried completely removing sql 2005 and .net
2.0. I have tried removing and re-adding to cluster. I have tried adding to
the cluster with advanced mode. Basically, at this point I'm flustered about
the error and there is relatively small amount of detail. The Event Logs
don't have anything helpful and the install logs show only what I'm seeing
during the install, not much else.

If anyone has seen this or knows what I might do to resolve this issue,
please let me know. I will be continuing my troubleshooting in different
ways so I may not have the machine and the logs availabe for very much longer.

PS. I am doing this via VMWare GSX 3.2 Server and have followed their doc's
for clustering.

we are currently struggeling at the same situation installin
sqlserver
2005 on a second cluster node.

we are also getting following errors (german installation) below.

have you ANY information that could help us getting this installation
run? we also have performered several steps including O
re-installation,
Cluster-node-remove/add, SQL-Server uninstallation on node 1,
reinstallation just on node 1 and then adding node 2 via sql-serve
setup
maintenance option.

any help is much appreciated.

after complete newinstallation of 2003 cluster
we took a closer look on the heartbeat network card configuration
and configured them as described in MS documentation.
(disable netbios over tcp/ip ...)

then we encountered other errors:

on node 1 (where we installed from the setup just stops and cleans
up after the first initialization dialog showing a hint to th
logfile:

and the request to send it to microsoft:

first we tried some days to find the error in the internet but
did not get any usefull hint.

we first set the hearbeat connection to half duplex, 10 mBit as
microsoft recommends.
--> no effect.

then we enabled netbios over TCP/IP for the heartbeat connection
(via cross over cable).
---> RESULT was: the error did not occur anymore. (we were happy, fo
some minutes)

then we had to rename the second node and evicted it from cluster
manager. after renaming and adding again, the error occurred again
ALTHOUGH netbios over tcp/ip was activated.

then we installed the NWLink SPX/IPX/netbios compatible protocol for
the heartbeat connection

--> RESULT: the setup continued with node1 + node2 checks.

then the components installed successfully until "SQL serve
database".

this setup failed on node 2 with log:

then also the setup showed an error that sql-native client could not be
installed and that it should be installed manually.
(error message that sqlncli.msi was not installed)


after that we took following actions:

1. uninstalled via add/remove programms
EVERYTHING that was installed by sql-server setup
on BOTH nodes:
(sql setup supportfiles, MSXML6, native client, office 2003 web
compontens, sql compatibility, sql vss writer)

2. installed in dcomcnfg - component services - computers - my
computer
- properties - default protocols
following protocols:
connection orientated tcp/ip (was already installed)
connection orientated SPX
datagram UDP/IP
tunneling TCP/IP


AFTER THAT the installation worked fine and sqlserver was installed
on both nodes and a failover switch worked fine.
