Mostly because they are so easy to make. For example, you have Ubuntu,
Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu CE - distrowatch counts each one of
these as a different distribution. Any teenage 'wizard' can make his own
distro fairly easily.

Because freedom of choice is one of the important aspects of open source.

Having only one distro would destroy Linux, not Windows.

Microsoft Windows comes in only one "distribution". Different versions
(95, 98, ME, XP, and Vista) but still single "distribution". However,
for a conspiratorial reason, Linux comes in more than one hundred
distributions! So thousands of software engineers and programmers are
wasting their efforts by duplicating their work. If they would just get
together and collaborate, they would be able to create a single unified
Linux and comprehensive line of wonderful applications that will put
Microsoft out of business.

There is a saying: Divide and conquer/rule.

For an example of a Unix-derived monoculture, look no farther than MacOSX.

It has the crummiest user-interface of the big three, as soon as the sweet
sting of its sugar-coating wears off.

Years ago, it almost got de-funded. It only exists because Microsoft
explicitly granted it a fiefdom.
