We did an upgrade similar to this a while ago. I don't recall the exact
versions but we are on Tools 8.48 now and the move from Informix 7.31 to
9.4 did improve performance noticeably.

The upgrade should improve performance. If users aren't
complaining
about performance yet, nuke a couple of indexes, and tell the
users the
application has outgrown the database server and it needs to be
upgraded ;-)
