What causes service-specific error 1814 (0x716)

  1. What causes service-specific error 1814 (0x716)

My development computer has an instance of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
and an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. When I reboot the computer, the
services for both instances have been stopped.

At boot up time, the system log has the following entries:

The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error
    1814 (0x716).
The SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service terminated with service-specific error
    1814 (0x716).

I can restart the services and they work properly until I reboot. Can
someone tell me what could be causing this error?

    Thanks,

    Keith

Error 1814 is "Could not create tempdb. You may not have enough disk space
available. Free additional disk space by deleting other files on the tempdb
drive and then restart SQL Server. Check for additional errors in the event
log that may indicate why the tempdb files could not be initialized." So
check whether you have enough space for tempdb.

I have 150gb available on the drive. What else could prevent the tempdb
    files from being initialized?

    Thanks,

    Keith

What sort of device is tempdb being created on? Do you have antivirus
software running that could be locking the file as it's created?
Something is interfering with the I/O during the creation of tempdb.

the device is an internal hard drive. The antivirus software is a good
    guess. I will pursue that.

    Thanks,

    Keith

You should exclude all of the file extensions (MDF, LDF, NDF, BAK, etc.)
that are used by SQL data files. The last thing you want is for the A/V
software to see something in a database file that it thinks is a virus
signature, then trying to "clean" it. :-)
