In-place upgrade - SQL Express to Standard

  1. In-place upgrade - SQL Express to Standard

    We are trying to upgrade SQL Express Edition to Standard using the
    SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter as follows:

    start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine
    INSTANCENAME=DEVELOPMENT\OFFICESERVERS UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

    We turned off the SQL Services before attempting the upgrade.

    We get the following error:

    TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
    ------------------------------

    SQL Server Setup cannot perform the upgrade because the component is not
    installed on the computer. To proceed, verify that the component to be
    upgraded is currently installed, and that the component to be upgraded is
    specified in the ADDLOCAL property. For more information, see Running Setup
    from the Command Prompt in SQL Server Books Online.

    For help, click:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkI...roduct%40x6d6b

    We have also tried replacing the INSTANCENAME parameter with variants such as

    MSSQL$OFFICESERVERS
    MSSQLSERVER
    MSSQLSERVER$OFFICESERVERS
    MSSQLSERVER\OFFICESERVERS

    All yield the same error.

    Advice on how to properly upgrade the SQL Express to standard would be
    greatly appreciated.

  2. Re: In-place upgrade - SQL Express to Standard

    Are you sure the server name / instance name are correct?
    What do you see in the registry, specifically:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance
    Names\SQL\
    and
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Machines\
    ?

    Looking in the registry was exactly what I need to do. This solved the issue.
    Thank you.
