SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi, is it possible to enable "Named Pipes" for SQL 2005 Server Embedded
Edition?
I mean the Embedded Edition not Express Edition!
I wan´t to use restore databases in Windows Share Point Services 3.0. But it
seems that Named Pipes are not enabled on the internal database engine and
the tools from Microsoft are not able to connect to the server.
Thanks in advance.

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi
Have you checked the sharepoint newsgroup
microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver it seems that you have to enable
remote connections (and possibly protocols) like other versions as described
in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 if you follow

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi John,
thanks for your information.
I have read a lot about this remote connection problem, especially with SQL
2005 Server Express Edition. So I was supposing that also the remote
connections are not enabled on the Embedded Edition of SQL 2005 Server.
One problem was that I didn`t found a solution to enable this remote
connections because the Surface Area Configuration - Tool which is installed
with the Express Edition is not installed in the Embedded Edition.
I got a tip from another guy to install the SQL 2005 Express - Toolkit.
In this toolkit there is the Surface Area Configuration - Tool integrated.
When I took a look on that tool the remote connections or protokols were
disabled for the Embedded SQL Server. When I enabled this and restarted the
services I tried again to connect to this instance via Management Studio and
"servername\microsoft##SSEE" but I got the remote connection error message
again.
So it seems that the configuration with the Surface Area Configuration -
Tool is not working. I think there is something special or locked on this
Embedded Edition of SQL 2005 Server.
Do you know a way to enable this remote connection on the Embedded Edition?
How can I connect to this server with servername\microsoft##SSEE?
Thanks
Florian

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi Florian
Have you also checked that the protocols are enabled using SQL Server
Configuration manager (SQLServerManager.msc)?

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi Florian
Have you connected via SQLCMD and specified the protocol on the command
line? Have you tried on the server itself as well as remotely?
Is there any Anti Virus software or similar running on the server?

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi John,
I was always working on the server itself.
The Server is running in a virtual machine (VMWare), but that shouldn´t be a
problem. Is it necessary that the server is member of a domain or that I
connect via a real domain account to the SQL-Server?
How is it possible to specify the used protocol for this connection?
Is enabling of the other protocols only possible per Surface Area
Configuration - Tool?
Regards

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Hi Florian
I can't say what restictions SSEE has, but the thread I posted in my
original reply http://tinyurl.com/2b4gba implies that you can, it also shows
you how to specify using named pipes.
Enabling protocols can be done in SQL Server Configuration Manager.

RE: SQL 2005 Server Embedded Edition
Again, thanks for the info John.
But it is really strange that MS doesn´t inform about this behaviour of the
embedded edition.
You find nearly nothing about that on the internet.
How can you properly administrate such an installation when you can´t use
the builtin tools in the official way?
